Con Visio puedes crear todo tipo de diagramas, desde los clásicos diagramas de flujo usados para tomar decisiones hasta planos de oficinas, pasando por diagramas de red, esquemas de circuitos eléctricos, diagramas Gantt y mapas conceptuales. En total, son ocho las categorías de diagramas cubiertas por Microsoft Visio.

Cada tipo de diagrama cuenta con una librería de objetos muy completa, a los que se pueden añadir imágenes externas y dibujos hechos con AutoCAD. A los diagramas resultantes es posible aplicar estilos gráficos predefinidos y comentarios de revisión. En el caso de diagramas de flujo, Visio puede revisar su lógica interna..
